Farris Jorn has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Or at least, that's what his therapist, Dr. Ligenfelter, tells him. In order to treat his disorder, Farris undergoes a hypnosis session that will allow him to recall the incident in his past, which has led to his PTSD, an incident that his mind has shut out from his conscious memory.
In a vivid flood of images and fragmented memories, Farris recalls his time in Afghanistan as a solider for the United States military. On a mission to capture a high ranking enemy combatant, Farris and his fellow soldier and friend, Clint Trucks, are ambushed and taken prisoner. For hours the two soldiers endure crippling torture sessions that push them to the very brink of death. Farris feels an uncontrollable rage well up inside of him. His pulse pounds a fevered beat against the walls of his veins. His muscles tighten. And then, nothing. Farris blacks out.
When he awakens dead bodies surround him. Of course, the bodies weren't just dead, they were eviscerated, literally ripped limb from limb. Among the dead is Clint, his head torn clean from his body. How did this happen? Who did this? The questions come faster than the answers. Then there's a flash in Farris' memory and he sees himself, eyes white hot with burning rage, as he kills his friend and fellow soldier.
Farris now lives with not only the knowledge that he violently and without reason killed his friend, but with the fear of the monster that is dwelling within him. It isn't easy. He has violent dreams that cause him to snap and lash out, smashing holes into the walls of his apartment, much to the displeasure of his girlfriend, Eva. He's seeing visions of Clint everywhere, his head reattached, his eyes vacant and accusing. Worst of all, he's finding it harder and harder to control his temper.
Elsewhere in the world, a young high school athlete, Aaron Bural, is looking for a change. His home life is a disaster. He's been kicked off the wrestling team at school for breaking a kid's arm in a fit of rage that he doesn't even remember. Seeing nothing left for himself, he decides to run off to New York with his girlfriend, Courtney. On their way out of town, Aaron loses control and crashes his car. As Courtney struggles to free herself from the wreck, Aaron, apparently unhurt by the accident, comes to her. He rips the car door from the twisted pile of metal to free her and blinded by the murderous rage inside of him, tearing off Courtney's head.
What is happening to these men? They are Berserkers, descendants of an ancient Norse bloodline that grants them incredible, feral strength, a strength that comes at the direst of costs.
